Shipmast Black Locust root cutting

$8.95

Robinia pseudoacacia

Root cutting genetics for this strain of black locust comes to you direct from pure Polish seedlings. Many European countries have been growing and developing timber quality black locust since the 1700’s. Because black locust is not a native tree in Europe the original genetics brought over have only been improved for timber qualities and have not been able to cross pollinate with more “wild variability” that we have in the USA. So, when you purchase these Polish trees you know you are getting trees developed for strait fast growth! Black locust is grown for its many uses: rot resistant wood, firewood, bee forage, beauty, carbon sequestration, soil building, edible flowers, animal fodder, and many more uses.

Becomes a large tree, can live 100 years. Or manage it for short rotation coppice.

NOTE: These genetics for growing in the USA are untested. I am selling these trees to you as experimental trees. My sense is that they will thrive in the more southern states (as the place they came from in Poland is more like a Virginia climate). Our first seedlings did survive two winters in Central NY, zone 5b (after all the genetics did originate on Long Island NY, but that is a much warmer zone). Good luck and let us know how it goes for you.

Can sucker from the roots if injured once established. Some States have regulations regarding the importation of this tree.

CAUTION: Black locust has large thorns so please be careful as you unbox the bare root trees, and wear gloves while planting.
