Hybrid Poplar OP-367 cuttings

Pre-order Plants for Spring 2024 Shipping

Welcome to the Food Forest Farm plant shop! Here you’ll find many of the plants we’ve been growing in the nursery since 2010. These plants will come to you healthy and ready for their new home.

All of our plants are multi-functional, that is, some perennial vegetables can be eaten by a human, or livestock (leaf hay), or be grown as mulch for biomass, and more! You can look at “All” of the plants, or filter with the navigation bar.

Perennial Vegetables: edible roots, leaves, shoots, buds, seeds that come from perennial herbs, shrubs, and trees

Fruit: edible sweet goodness

Leaf Hay: plants to grow and feed to livestock like cattle, sheep, goats and rabbits

Biomass: herbs, grasses, shrubs and trees that grow fast and can be cut and used as mulch, grow soil, fuel stoves and compost piles

These cuttings are a selected strain of OP-367 from Frank Gomez in PA. It is a male clone that’s been grown from Alaska to the Texas panhandle and everywhere in between. OP-367 is one of the most disease resistant and fastest growing poplars. We’ve had amazing success with this tree and are expanding our plantings next year. Our plan is to grow it as a cheap and easily harvested firewood and have perfect size logs in 5 years. And continue to coppice these same trees for decades to come. We’ll be choppicing it for nutrient rich mulch, and in the future as livestock fodder. We don’t have great areas on our farm to plant wind breaks or visual screens but they’ll do that in 3 years! I can see them used as nurse trees for other fast growing timber species like black walnut or black locust. In Europe and Asia poplar is planted in agroforestry systems to improve row crop and livestock health and productivity. Coolest of all is, you’ll receive these 2 bud cuttings from us, dip them in rooting hormone, plant in their new home, water during dry times, and by the end of the season they’ll be a tree! Make sure to keep them weed free and away from browsing animals for a year for best success.
